AC Repair & Service in Scarborough, Durham and the Greater Toronto Area

What causes an air conditioner to stop cooling, what a repair visit covers, and when repair stops making sense against replacement.

AC repair in Scarborough, Durham and the GTA

If your air conditioner is running but the house is not getting cool, the cause is almost always one of six things: low refrigerant, a failing compressor, restricted airflow, a blocked condensate drain, a miscalibrated thermostat, or an electrical control that has stopped switching. Metropolitan Heating and Air Conditioning has diagnosed and repaired those faults across Scarborough, Durham Region and the wider GTA since 1979, on all makes and models.

Call (416) 283-5698 to book a repair visit. Our office hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Symptoms and what usually causes them

Knowing which symptom you have narrows the diagnosis considerably, and it helps us arrive with the right parts.

  • Warm air from the vents while the unit runs. Typically low refrigerant from a leak, a failing compressor, or a condenser coil so dirty it cannot reject heat. Refrigerant is not consumed in normal operation — if it is low, there is a leak, and topping it up without finding the leak only defers the same failure.
  • Weak airflow. Usually a clogged filter, a failing blower motor or capacitor, or duct leakage. Where cooling was added to a house that originally had only a furnace, the ductwork is often still sized for heating alone and was never re-balanced for the airflow the coil needs.
  • Ice on the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil. Airflow restriction or low refrigerant. Shut the system off and let it thaw before the visit — running it iced up can damage the compressor.
  • Water pooling near the indoor unit. A blocked condensate drain or a frozen coil that has thawed. Left alone this reaches drywall and framing.
  • Short cycling. Starting and stopping every few minutes points to a refrigerant problem, a faulty thermostat, or a system oversized for the house.
  • Grinding, squealing or banging. Mechanical — a failing motor bearing, a loose blower wheel, or a compressor under strain.

Shut the system down and call us rather than running it if you notice burning smells, smoke, scorched or exposed wiring, or water near anything electrical.

What the repair visit involves

We start from the symptom you describe and work outward through the components that produce it. A typical visit covers static pressure and airflow, the thermostat and its wiring, electrical measurements at the contactor and capacitor, refrigerant pressures and superheat, the condensate path, and the condition of both coils.

You get the diagnosis before any work begins — what failed, what it will take to correct, and whether anything else is close enough to failure to be worth addressing on the same visit. If a repair does not make economic sense against the age and condition of the equipment, we will say so plainly rather than sell you the repair.

What to have ready when you call

Four things make the first visit far more productive: the make and model from the label on the outdoor unit, roughly how old the system is, exactly what the symptom is and when it started, and whether it is constant or intermittent. If your thermostat is showing a fault code, read it out. A photo of the equipment label is ideal.

Equipment we service

We work on all makes and models, and we install and service Carrier, Lennox, Napoleon, Trane, Bosch and Daikin. Parts availability varies by brand and age — if a component is discontinued we will tell you what the alternatives are, including whether an equivalent aftermarket part is appropriate for your system.

When repair stops being the right answer

Repair is usually the right call on a system under roughly twelve years old with a single identifiable fault. The calculation changes when the compressor has failed, when the system uses a refrigerant that is no longer produced, or when you are facing a third significant repair in as many seasons. In those cases we will price the repair and the replacement side by side so you can compare them honestly. Financing is available through Vista.
