HVAC service in Scarborough

Scarborough is where we work from. Metropolitan Heating and Air Conditioning has run out of a shop on Venture Drive since 1979, and Scarborough calls go out from the same building the vans are stocked in. We cover heating, cooling, heat pumps, ductless systems, indoor air quality, water heating and controls, on all makes and models.

Call (416) 283-5698, Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

What having our own base means in practice

It means the parts stock, the diagnostic equipment and the people sit in one place rather than across a dispatch network. When you describe a symptom on the phone, the person taking that description can check whether the part is on the shelf before the visit is booked. When a fault turns out to be something other than it first looked, the second part is a trip back to the shop rather than a wait on a supplier.

It also means continuity: a company at one address since 1979 holds service history on equipment it installed years ago, and knows what it put in.

Heating

Most of our winter work is gas forced-air. A furnace burns fuel inside a sealed heat exchanger, the blower pushes house air across the outside of that exchanger, and the combustion products leave through the flue. The two air streams never meet — which is why a cracked heat exchanger is the one fault that ends a furnace rather than starting a repair.

Typical faults are ignition problems, a dirty flame sensor, a failing blower motor or capacitor, a restricted filter tripping the limit switch, or a control board that has stopped sequencing. Our heating work covers diagnosis and repair, the annual service that prevents most of those faults, and replacement when a furnace has reached the end of its life.

Cooling

An air conditioner does not manufacture cold air. It moves heat out of the house and rejects it outside, using refrigerant that evaporates at the indoor coil and condenses at the outdoor one. Almost every cooling complaint traces back to that loop being interrupted — low refrigerant from a leak, a coil too dirty to transfer heat, a compressor or capacitor failing, or airflow too restricted for the coil to do its job.

Refrigerant is not consumed in normal operation. If the charge is low there is a leak, and topping it up without finding it only defers the same failure. Air conditioning work runs from diagnosis through repair, seasonal service and replacement.

Heat pumps and ductless

A heat pump is the same refrigerant loop with a reversing valve, so it can move heat into the house as well as out of it. That makes it one machine for both seasons, and it adds components a plain air conditioner does not have — the reversing valve itself, and a defrost circuit that periodically melts frost off the outdoor coil. Frost forming out there in winter is normal; a coil encased in solid ice is not.

A ductless mini-split is a heat pump without ductwork: an outdoor unit joined by refrigerant lines to one or more indoor heads. It is the usual answer for a space the ducts cannot serve properly — an addition, a converted garage, a finished basement, or the room at the end of the run that is never the right temperature.

Air quality, water heating and controls

Indoor air quality covers what is in the air and how much moisture it carries. Both are separate from temperature, and neither is solved by the thermostat. Filtration captures particles as air passes through the return; humidity control adds or removes moisture so the air behaves the way the thermostat setting implies it should.

We also service and replace water heaters, and fit smart controls — thermostats that stage equipment properly and report what the system has actually been doing, which is often more useful diagnostically than anything observable from the hallway.

How a first visit works

We start from the symptom you describe and verify rather than assume. A visit covers the thermostat and its wiring, filter condition and airflow, the electrical measurements relevant to the fault, and the components that produce the symptom you reported.

You get the finding before any work begins: what failed, what correcting it involves, and whether anything adjacent is close enough to failure to be worth doing on the same visit. If a repair does not make sense against the age and condition of the equipment, we will say so and price both paths rather than sell you the repair. Financing is available through Vista.

Booking from Scarborough

Call (416) 283-5698, Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Have the make, model and rough age of the equipment ready, plus the symptom and when it started — usually enough for us to arrive with the right part.

We are licensed and insured, we work on all makes and models, and we install Carrier, Lennox, Napoleon, Trane, Bosch and Daikin. Scarborough is one of the places we cover — see the full service area.
