Humidity and comfort in West Rouge, Ontario

If your house reads 21 °C and still feels wrong, temperature is not the problem. Comfort combines air temperature, the temperature of surrounding surfaces, air movement and moisture — and a thermostat measures one of those four. Metropolitan Heating and Air Conditioning has fitted and serviced humidity equipment on forced-air systems since 1979, and serves West Rouge from our shop on Venture Drive in Scarborough.

Why the number on the wall is only part of the picture

Your body loses heat two ways a thermostat cannot see: it radiates to cold surfaces, and it evaporates moisture from skin and lungs.

That is why a room with a large cold window feels colder than its air temperature — you are radiating to the glass. And it is why dry air feels cooler: evaporation from skin carries heat away faster when the surrounding air is far from saturated. Raise the moisture content and the same air temperature feels warmer. Lower it, and people turn the thermostat up to compensate for something it was never measuring.

Winter dryness: the house did not lose moisture

Relative humidity is the fraction of the moisture the air could hold at its current temperature that it is actually holding. The word "relative" is what trips people up, because warm air can hold far more water than cold air.

Outdoor air at −15 °C holds almost nothing, even when saturated, and that air leaks into every house continuously. Heat it to 21 °C indoors and its capacity multiplies while the water content stays where it was, so relative humidity collapses into the single digits. Nothing dried the house out — the denominator grew. That is the mechanism behind static shocks, gaps opening in hardwood and trim, and an Ontario winter that feels colder than the thermostat suggests.

Your windows set the ceiling

Roughly 30 to 40% relative humidity is a sensible winter target indoors, but the upper end is not fixed — it moves with the outdoor temperature.

Air touching a cold pane cools until it hits its dew point, then deposits water on the glass. On a −20 °C night a window's interior surface is far colder than the room, so a setting that was comfortable at 0 °C outside will run down the glass in a cold snap. That is not cosmetic: water off the glass reaches the sill and the wall cavity, and sustained wetting causes damage nobody sees until it is significant.

The practical rule is to reduce the humidifier setting as it gets colder outdoors and raise it as it warms. A humidistat with an outdoor sensor does that continuously, which is the argument for fitting one rather than a manual dial.

Summer: cooling only dries the air while it runs

An air conditioner dehumidifies as a side effect. Its coil operates below the dew point of the air passing over it, so water condenses out and drains away. That works well during long run cycles on hot days.

It works poorly in two situations. On mild, humid days the house barely calls for cooling, so the coil is rarely cold for long. And an oversized system satisfies the thermostat in short bursts — plenty of sensible cooling, very little moisture removed. The outcome is a house at the correct temperature that feels clammy, most noticeably in a basement, where cooler surfaces sit closer to the dew point of the air around them.

What actually fixes it

In winter, a whole-home humidifier ducted into the forced-air system adds moisture in proportion to the house rather than to one room. Bypass units pass furnace airflow across a wetted pad and work only while the blower runs. Fan-powered units add their own blower and deliver more per hour. Steam units generate vapour independently of furnace heat, so they can humidify on blower-only operation. Sizing follows the volume of the house and how leaky it is, not floor area alone.

In summer, a whole-home dehumidifier ducted into the system controls moisture regardless of whether cooling is called for, and holds a humidity target rather than a temperature one. Around 50% is a reasonable ceiling. The other half of the answer is sizing — a correctly sized air conditioner runs longer cycles and removes more moisture on its own, which is why replacement sizing deserves a load calculation rather than a match to the old unit.

Filtration is a separate variable often confused with this one: a filter changes what the air carries, not how much moisture it holds — see air filtration.
