Why the timing matters as much as the work
Very few HVAC failures are genuinely sudden. A flame sensor accumulates a film of oxide over months. A capacitor loses capacitance gradually until it can no longer start a motor. Refrigerant leaks out through a pinhole across two or three seasons before performance drops enough to notice. Bearings dry out and get noisy long before they seize.
What all of those have in common is that they are cheap and simple to correct while the system is idle, and disruptive once the system is carrying load. They also tend to surface at the same moment across an entire region, because that is when the equipment is finally working hard enough to expose them. Booking in the shoulder season means a fault is found while it is still an adjustment, and while the part is straightforward to source.
There is a second reason. Most manufacturer warranties on equipment require documented annual servicing. If your system is still inside its warranty term, a missed service can be the reason a claim is refused years later.
Before the heating season: early autumn
Aim to have the furnace or heat pump serviced before the first sustained cold stretch, not after it.
A heating service is a sequence of checks rather than a look. Burners, the flame sensor and the ignition assembly are cleaned, because a sensor with an oxide film is the classic cause of a furnace that lights and then shuts down a few seconds later. Gas pressure is verified against the manufacturer's specification instead of being left as found. The blower wheel is cleaned — dust on the wheel reduces airflow, which raises temperature rise across the heat exchanger and shortens its life. The heat exchanger is inspected for cracking, the flue for corrosion and separation, and the safety chain — limit, rollout and pressure switches — is tested rather than assumed.
Then a full heating cycle is run from call for heat through ignition, steady operation and shutdown. Some intermittent faults reveal themselves nowhere else. Details are in furnace maintenance and tune-ups.
Before the cooling season: spring
Cooling gets checked on the same logic, with different physics. Refrigerant pressures and superheat are measured, which is how a slow leak is caught while it is still slow. Both coils are cleaned: a condenser coil packed with dust and cottonwood cannot reject heat, and the system compensates by running longer and hotter. The condensate path is cleared, because a drain that backs up puts water near drywall and framing. Electrical measurements are taken at the contactor and capacitor, since a capacitor drifting out of tolerance is a compressor that will one day fail to start on a hot afternoon.

What you can do between visits
Change or wash the filter on the schedule the manufacturer specifies, and more often if you have pets or work underway in the house. Keep supply registers and return grilles clear of furniture and rugs. Keep the space around indoor equipment clear and unused for storage. Keep the outdoor unit free of leaves, grass clippings and anything stacked against it.
If you notice a new noise or the cycling pattern changes, write down when it happens and what the system was doing. That single detail shortens the next diagnosis considerably.
