Furnace Installation & Replacement in Scarborough, Durham and the Greater Toronto Area

Why sizing matters more than capacity, what gets assessed before a quote, and what commissioning a new furnace properly involves.

Furnace installation and replacement in Scarborough, Durham and the GTA

The single biggest determinant of how a new furnace performs is not the brand on the cabinet — it is whether it was sized and installed correctly. Metropolitan Heating and Air Conditioning has been installing furnaces across Scarborough, Durham Region and the GTA since 1979, and we install Carrier, Lennox, Napoleon, Trane, Bosch and Daikin.

Why sizing matters more than capacity

An oversized furnace is a common and expensive mistake. It satisfies the thermostat quickly, shuts off, and repeats — short cycling that produces uneven temperatures between rooms, more wear on the ignition and blower, and worse humidity behaviour than a correctly sized unit running longer, gentler cycles.

Sizing comes from a heat-loss calculation for your actual house: floor area and layout, insulation levels, window area and orientation, air-tightness, and the duct system already in place. It does not come from the rating on the furnace being replaced, which may itself have been wrong.

What gets assessed before we quote

  • Heat-loss calculation for the property as it is now, including any additions or renovations since the last system went in
  • Existing ductwork — sizing, condition, return capacity, and whether it can carry the airflow the new unit needs
  • Gas line capacity and the venting route, including whether a high-efficiency unit's condensate and PVC venting can be run properly
  • Electrical supply and the existing thermostat wiring
  • Combustion air supply for the space the furnace sits in
  • Rooms that have never heated well, which are usually a distribution problem and worth solving during the changeover rather than after

How the installation runs

The old unit is disconnected and removed, and its refrigerant or gas connections made safe. The new furnace is set, connected and vented to the manufacturer's instructions — that instruction sheet is also what most warranties are written against. Gas piping and electrical are connected and tested, condensate is routed and trapped where the design requires it, and the thermostat is wired and configured.

Commissioning is the part that separates a working installation from a correct one: gas pressure set to specification, temperature rise measured across the heat exchanger and brought within the rated band, airflow adjusted, safeties tested, and a full cycle observed. We walk you through filter location and type, thermostat operation, and what normal sounds like for the unit you now own.

Things worth doing at the same time

A changeover is the cheapest moment to correct duct problems, add a return where a room has never had enough airflow, or fit a thermostat that actually suits how you use the house. It is also the natural point to consider whether a heat pump suits your property, since much of the work overlaps.

What it costs, honestly

We will not publish a price for a furnace, because a furnace installation is not a product. The number depends on the heat load, the efficiency tier you choose, what the venting and gas supply need, and what condition the ductwork is in. What you should expect from any quote — ours included — is an itemised scope showing the equipment, the labour, and any supporting work, so you can compare like with like. Financing is available through Vista.
