Furnace repair in Scarborough, Durham and the GTA
A furnace that has stopped heating properly is usually telling you which part has failed, if you know how to read it. Metropolitan Heating and Air Conditioning has repaired gas and electric furnaces across Scarborough, Durham Region and the GTA since 1979, on all makes and models.

Shut it down and call if you notice any of these
Most furnace faults can wait for a scheduled visit. These cannot. Turn the system off at the thermostat and the service switch first.
- A smell of gas anywhere near the appliance
- Soot, scorching or melted insulation around the burner compartment or flue
- A carbon monoxide alarm sounding
- A yellow, lazy or flickering burner flame where it should be crisp and blue
- Visible cracking or rust perforation on the heat exchanger
A cracked heat exchanger is the one that matters most. It can let combustion products into the air you breathe, and it is not a repair — it is a condemned furnace.
What the common symptoms usually mean
Banging on start-up. Often delayed ignition: gas accumulating for a moment before it lights. Worth addressing promptly rather than living with.
Squealing or grinding while running. Mechanical — a blower motor bearing, a slipping belt on older units, or a wheel out of balance.
Short cycling. Starting and stopping every few minutes. Usually a restricted filter, a blocked return, a failing flame sensor, or a furnace oversized for the house.
Blower that never shuts off. Typically the fan limit switch or a thermostat set to continuous fan rather than auto.
Pilot or ignition trouble on older systems. Commonly a dirty flame sensor or a failing thermocouple, both routine parts.
Heating bills climbing without a rate change. The furnace is working harder for the same output — dirty burners, poor airflow, duct losses, or a system past its efficient life.
How we work through it
We start from your description, then verify rather than assume. A repair visit typically covers the thermostat and its calibration, the filter and static pressure, the burner and flame sensor, the ignition sequence, gas pressure, the electrical connections and safety switches, the flue and venting, and a visual inspection of the heat exchanger.
You get the finding before the work: what failed, what it takes to fix, and whether anything adjacent is close enough to failing to be worth doing on the same visit rather than a second call-out.
Repair or replace
Repair is usually right for a furnace under roughly fifteen years old with one identifiable fault and an intact heat exchanger. It stops being right when the heat exchanger has failed, when parts are no longer manufactured, or when repair costs are stacking up season after season. We will price both paths side by side rather than steer you. Financing is available through Vista.
What to have ready
The make and model from the label inside the furnace door, roughly how old it is, what the thermostat is doing, and any code the control board is flashing. Note whether the fault is constant or intermittent, and what was happening when it started.
